Shocking Revelation! Maurice Benard reveals Sonny’s final scene, Announces Retirement Plan and Leave GH

General Hospital (GH) spoilers hint that Sonny Corinthos may have moved away from the decision to retire from the mob, but his portrayer, actor Maurice Benard, recently revealed he has a retirement plan as it relates to his current GH soap opera gig.
Benard recently appeared on the “Soapy” YouTube channel, a new podcast hosted by real-life BFFs, Greg Rikaart (Days of Our Lives’s Leo Stark) and Rebecca Budig (The Bold and the Beautiful’s Taylor Hayes).
Benard talked about his daytime drama career, including his own YouTube series, ‘State of Mind’, that invites guests from the soap opera world (and beyond) to talk about mental health.
He also spoke about his time on All My Children (AMC), when he played the character, Nico Kelly.
The actor held nothing back when he discussed his reason for leaving AMC, and the fact that he had ‘movie star’ aspirations.
Sadly, after moving to Los Angeles, Benard revealed he had gone broke. Benard also retold a story about his wife telling him about General Hospital calling for him, and he exclaimed, “I am not doing another soap opera.”
The good news is, he gave GH a chance, stepped into the Sonny Corinthos role in 1993, and the rest is history.
Sonny is certainly a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ soap character, and the mob boss continues to dominate storylines on the show, even today.
Still, despite Sonny’s dangerous career choice, Benard did note during his ‘Soapy’ interview that fans seem a lot more concerned that Sonny could pass away at any given moment these days, either due to his organized crime activities or a heart attack, as the character has had some health issues in this area as of late.
Benard jokingly added that the reason for the worry regarding Sonny’s demise is potentially because he’s older now and coming close to retirement.
The actor talked a little bit about his retirement plan, noting he is 62 years of age, and then added, “Maybe another couple years, three years. And then we’ll see what happens.”
Benard is a vital part of the GH canvas, and while audiences would hate to see him exit, after over three decades of entertaining soap viewers, he deserves a break (at some point).
General Hospital spoilers remind fans that, for the time being, Sonny isn’t going anywhere, as he aims to find out an unknown threat that is targeting him, while also trying to fend off his current rival, Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota).
