Shocking GH Truth: Nicholas’s On-Screen Return… CANCELED: Here’s Why

There is no sign of Spencer returning from the dead on General Hospital so for those missing Nicholas Alexander Chavez, it was exciting to hear that he had landed a role in the sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer, as first reported by our sister site Deadline back in November 2024.

However, there’s since been bigger news — that Chavez’s part in the film has been scraped.

People learned that the former ABC soap fave, along with Lola Tung, will not be seen in the July 18 release. Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson told the magazine that though the actors were planned to kick off the opener, the scene ended up not fitting with the film.

“This is a fantastic scene. But it doesn’t fit in the movie,” said Robinson, who also assured it had nothing to do with Chavez and Tung and added, “I loved working with them. They did a fabulous job. But in the larger tapestry of the film, it just didn’t fit.”

The 1997 film, which starred Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe, surrounded four friends who were stalked by a hook-wielding maniac following a tragic accident.

A year later, the sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer was released followed by the 2006 direct-to-video movie, which didn’t feature any of the original cast.

Speaking of original castmembers… Prinze Jr. will return for the latest installment and Hewitt is currently in talks for a comeback. Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Haur-King have also been cast. Stay tuned for its July 18, 2025 release date.

It’s official. Nicholas Alexander Chavez has confirmed he is not returning to General Hospital. In a message on X (fka Twitter), Chavez, who portrayed Spencer in the ABC daytime drama, expressed his gratitude to fans.

“I’m so appreciative of the opportunity that GH gave me, and I wouldn’t be as busy as I am professionally if it weren’t for the talented producers, writers, directors and fellow actors,” Chavez wrote. “

Frank Valentini [executive producer] is a mentor and a friend, and we’ve had some pretty extensive conversations about my future on the show. While there are no current plans for me to return, we are still talking very openly about future possibilities for Spencer in Port Charles.

“Beyond the people I’ve already mentioned, I want to take some time to thank and honor the GH fan base,” he continued, “especially the ‘Sprina’ fans, who must be the most loyal and kind fan base in the universe of entertainment. Words fail to show the depth of my gratitude, thank you, I love you all very, very much.”

Chavez took what was described as a temporary leave of absence earlier this year to film a role in Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology series for Netflix.

He joined General Hospital in 2021 and won a Daytime Emmy in 2022 for Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series.

Chavez was last seen on-screen on January 31. He was drugged by his ex Esme and both were presumed dead after falling off a boat into the Seine.
