General Hospital Alum Nicholas Alexander Chavez Shines In Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie—Release Date REVEALED!

Less than a year after General Hospital sent Spencer Cassadine plunging into the Seine River, portrayer Nicholas Alexander Chavez is bobbing to the surface. On September 25, the Emmy winner will be back on screen in Ryan Murphy’s new FX thriller, Grotesquerie. Better still, we now know exactly when his other big project, Monsters, will hit Netflix… and it’s an entire week before Grotesquerie!
As you can see from the trailer below, very little of the actual miniseries is shown. It’s only in the final seconds that we get what we’ve been not-so-patiently waiting for as the release date — Thursday, September 19 — pops up on screen.
In the 10-episode drama, Niecy Nash-Betts, who won an Emmy for Season 1 of Murphy’s Monster, stars as a police detective who teams up with a nun in hopes of solving a particularly heinous series of crimes. Chavez plays Father Charlie in a cast that also includes Courtney B. Vance and, in a top-secret role, Travis Kelce — yes, Taylor Swift’s significant other, that Travis Kelce.
When Chavez left General Hospital in late 2023, it was to accept one of the leads in Season 2 of Murphy’s Monster, about the infamous Menendez brothers. At the time, the actor was expected to return as Spencer once filming on the series was complete. Then it turned out that we had “Seine” the last of him on the soap. Then — and yes, it made our heads spin, too — he tweeted that “we are still talking very openly about future possibilities for Spencer in Port Charles.”
As yet, none have arisen… that we know of. (Better than any other daytime drama, General Hospital knows how to surprise us, so Spencer could up out of the blue anytime!) In the meantime, American Horror Story co-creator Murphy, knowing a good thing when he sees one, immediately cast Chavez in Grotesquerie.
The writer/director/producer, as you may know, has a habit of working over and over again with actors who inspire him. Season 1 of Monster starred frequent AHS lead Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer. All My Children alum Finn Wittrock has appeared in five seasons of AHS and Murphy’s American Crime Story and Ratched.

The first season of Netflix’s Monsters engrossed us in the real-life chilling story of Lyle and Erik Menendez. The General Hospital actor’s upcoming project, Grotesquerie, centers around a chain of disturbing crimes that shake up a small town. The horror drama will premiere on September 25 on FX, with episodes dropping the next day on Hulu.
Moreover, Nicholas posted the key art for Grotesquerie on his social media with a cryptic caption: “Nightmare fuel loading… @grotesqueriefx @ryanmurphyproductions.” His ex-GH co-stars Giovanni Mazza and Tanisha Harper were quick to show their support with electrifying comments. We bet the teaser trailer alone will give you goosebumps! So, what is it all about?
It begins with Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) on edge, feeling as if these crimes are aimed directly at her. The situation back home is not so pleasant either, as she struggles with a fractured relationship with her daughter. Additionally, Nancy’s husband is stuck in long-term hospital care, and her own personal demons suck the life out of her.
Eventually, she confides in Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond). She’s a nun and journalist who believes in the goodness of humanity despite her tragic past. The ladies unearth an evil mystery that only deepens the enigma. Where does Chavez fit in? The GH star joins this star-studded cast as Father Charlie, adding another layer of intrigue to the show.
The cast includes legends like Courtney B. Vance, Lesley Manville, Raven Goodwin, and Travis Kelce. Furthermore, Grotesquerie will be released before Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. As for the ABC soap, we don’t know whether they’ll recast Spencer Cassadine’s role.
