Maurice Benard Honors Late General Hospital Co-Star
Maurice Benard has been on General Hospital for over thirty years. He’s acted alongside many daytime icons. Sadly, the soap world lost one of those icons this week to cancer. Tristan Rogers, who played Robert Scorpio on the ABC soap on and off since 1980, succumbed to cancer just a month after publicly revealing the diagnosis.
The shocking death came less than a year after Days of Our Lives lost actor Drake Hogestyn to cancer in September 2024. Soap fans and actors who worked with Tristan Rogers took to social media to pay tribute.
Maurice Benard honored the legend by reposting the actor’s appearance on the State of Mind podcast. Maurice Benard created the podcast to discuss mental health issues. The actor has been open about his struggle with bipolar disorder and even had it written into the show by having Sonny struggle with the disorder.
Tristan Rogers reflected on how what was supposed to be a two-day part became a decades-long role.
“I had no name. I was brought in, expressly, to beat up the hero, Luke [Anthony Geary], and then disappear. A half a day goes by, and I get summoned into Gloria’s [Monty] office. And she said, ‘We really like what you are doing. Would you like to stay?’” [His expression feigned speechlessness] And then he said, ‘Yes.’

He Opens Up About Mental Health, Breaks Down In Interview
Maurice Benard invites all types of guests to his podcast. Tristan Rogers is just one of his many General Hospital co-stars to appear on the podcast over the years. He recently welcomed actress Elizabeth Morales to the podcast.
The two kicked off the podcast by bonding over their shared last name. While Maurice Benard is his legal name now, the actor was born Mauricio José Morales. He changed his name early in his career after almost losing out on a job because of his Spanish-sounding last name.
The State of Mind podcast also addressed their respective religion experiences. They both grew up around religion. Maurice Benard recounted growing up Catholic. He revealed that he was always afraid of death until a life-changing experience during one of several mental breakdowns.
The General Hospital star revealed that he’s no longer afraid of death after a comforting experience that solidified his belief in Heaven.
